B

Binary

A number system based only on the numerals 0 and 1. In DCC, this can also represent the two states of ON and OFF. In DCC, binary is encoded using a square wave form.

Bit

Is the smallest unit of data which can be stored. A bit is always in one of two physical states, similar to an on/off light switch. The state is represented by a single binary value, usually a 0 or 1. However, the state might also be represented by yes/no, on/off or true/false. 8 bits make a byte.

Bowden cable

A flexible cable which can transmit a mechanical force by the movement of an inner cable within an outer cable housing. Often found used with bicycle gears.

A bowden cable

Brazing

A type of hard-soldering, taking place at 450 °C or above.

Brush

A [carbon] brush is an electrical contact, which conducts current between stationary and rotating parts.

Bus

A bus is simply a length of cable which carries power or data, it may consist of 1 or more wires, commonly two.

Common bus types found on model railways are:

  • Power bus: Carries DCC power and data around the layout
  • Accessory Bus: Provides power and optionally data for accessory decoders, commonly uses a separate power supply to the main power bus.
  • Data bus: Connects items together and carries data, a common use is in providing a data link for boosters or connecting block detection devices.

Byte

A digital unit of information that in the DCC world consists of eight bits.
